Blinds or Curtains? Decisions, Decisions

When decorating a room you are going to, at some point, need to decide how to dress the windows – but what should you choose – blinds or curtains?

There are a variety of positives and negatives to each option, and more if you think about the many different varieties of blinds and curtains available. But whether it’s Venetian or roller blinds, or long flowing curtains, there will be something to accommodate you and your tastes.

The key advantage for choosing blinds over curtains is the ease at which they can be cleaned. Curtains are prone to attracting dust, and cleaning them can be a tasking job. Whilst you may still have the problem of attracting dust with blinds, particularly if you opt for blinds comprised of slats, the difference is, they’re easy to clean. For real ease with regards to cleaning, you can’t beat a roller blind, all you will have to do is just wipe the single sheet.

Alternatively, thick curtains are good insulators and can help in keeping the warmth inside through the chilly winter season, helping you save a little on ever rising heating bills. Generally curtains are the more sensible choice in terms of maintaining heat, but if you’ve already chosen blinds the insulating properties will be down to the material that the blinds are made from.

Some people choose curtains over blinds because of the large range of fabrics and colours that are available. Whereas some individuals do not think they’ll find blinds that would look right with the decor they have chosen. While this may have been true previously, there are certain types of blinds that will allow you to adorn your windows with designs more colourful than you would ever have believed.

Unlike many types of blind which are made up of slats, roller blinds incorporate one piece of material. Whilst a single bit of material may appear plain and boring, it will be the fact that it’s made of one single piece of material that enables a selection of designs to be printed. While many suppliers of roller blinds will offer you an enormous range of ready-made designs, some companies will in fact let you too choose your own personal design that can then be printed on the blinds. The sort of designs typically chosen are ones that will match other parts of the decor, maybe a photo or a pattern created by a member of family.

If you’d prefer a more classic look in your property, other types of blinds might be more suitable. Blinds manufactured from materials for example wood or metal tend to be the more pricey option. Metal has gathered a lot of popularity lately, because of the hardwearing nature of the material and the ease at which it can be cleaned. Wood is popular due to the traditional, homely feel it generally creates. Whilst wooden blinds can be easy to maintain you do have to pay particular attention to the sort of product you’re using and be sure that it’s actually acceptable for wood.
